Job Title: Medical Laboratory Assistant

Grade: Band 3

Location: Main site. Western Bank. Sheffield S10 2TH

Hours: Full time- 37.5 hours per week, Mon-Fri 9:30 am-5 pm

The genetics department have many temporary opportunities for Lab Assistants to join their team for a minimum of six months.

The purpose of the Lab Assistant post is to provide technical support for a wide range of Laboratory Service teams within the Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Laboratory.

Roles and Responsibilities include:

  • Sample processing
  • Preparation and maintenance of cell cultures
  • Harvesting cell cultures, slide making and staining to produce chromosome preparations
  • Input of data into the laboratory computer system
  • Processing certain stages of fluorescence in situ hybridisation slides (FISH)
  • Handling and distributing stock
  • Preparing laboratory & clinical waste for appropriate disposal
  • Contributing to the maintenance, cleaning and monitoring of laboratory safety cabinets, centrifuges, fridges, freezers and water baths.

· Maintaining a cleaning schedule for laboratory benches and sinks

To be successful in applying for this role you will need:

· Minimum 2 A levels or equivalent in science related subjects or relevant laboratory experience.

· Laboratory experience including an understanding of laboratory procedures and health and safety regulations

· Experience of using different IT systems

· Ability to plan and prioritise workload according to deadlines

· Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work in an accurate, methodical way

· Ability to work under own initiative as well as working as part of a team

· Good verbal and written communication skills

· Able to work to standard operating procedures and contribute to their review and implementation

· Good manual dexterity and coordination

Salary: £11.85 per hour
